one who understands

MAVEN is a short documentary set out on the Main Range, in NSW, Australia. This film, directed and shot by Divya Gordon, features athlete Chess Smee as well as members of an adventurous alpine community. It captures a different perspective on exploration, both of the backcountry and of oneself.

Directed & Produced by Divya Gordon - a mountain based filmmaker.

From the heights of Federation Peak to the depths of the Coral Sea, she is passionate about adventuring and feels even more strongly about telling stories from the communities and places that have impacted her life.

About

To be strong does not mean to sprout muscles and Flex. It means meeting one's own Numinosity without Fleeing, actively living with the wild nature in one's own way. It means to be able to learn, to be able to stand what we know. It means to stand and live.

Featuring Francesca “Chess” Smee started her career with Thredbo Ski School and took her instructing to Japan where she was introduced to the backcountry of Niseko and Central Hokkaido. It was here that she developed her love for the mountains whilst empowering people to safely enjoy the outdoors. She now balances instructing in Thredbo with backcountry guiding for K7 Adventures during the Australian snow season and currently spends northern winters in Canada as a practicum heli-ski guide and race and freeride coach in Revelstoke.

Chess places a lot of emphasis on her own professional development and currently holds certifications for Level 3 Ski Instructing, Level 1 Avalanche Operations, Wilderness First Aid and Cert IV Alpine Guide. She loves building appreciation of nature in young people and is humbled by the beauty of the mountains and the challenges they provide her with.
